Norwegian prime minister commits to fight for birth registration

Norwegian prime minister commits to fight for birth registrationNorway's prime minister, Kjell Magne Bondevik, pledged to support the universal birth registration campaign, after he expressed his appreciation for the Plan initiative.

Commenting on the campaign Bondevik said: "Birth registration will help children secure their rights, and I am pleased that Plan has taken this initiative and started this campaign. Birth registration is a national responsibility, but it is important that an organisation, such as Plan, puts some pressure on governments around the world.

"Children that cannot prove their identity are in danger of losing their rights, and some may become victims of trafficking, war, or abuse in other ways. The Norwegian government has its own strategy to secure children's rights in its international aid policy, and I am glad that Plan and the government work together on these issues."

Sandro Parmeggiani, national director of Plan Norway, challenged the prime minister to make sure that every minister in the government brought up the issue of birth registration in every international meeting that they participated in, that the money the government used on international aid supported birth registration projects, and that Norway shared its know-how on birth registration with developing countries.

Bondevik replied, "In September I will be going to New York to attend a United Nations session with world leaders, and I think this is a good opportunity to bring up the issue of birth registration.

I have two daughters and a son and I want them to be equally able to register their children
