Going from strength to strength in Bolivia
In Bolivia Plan’s universal birth registration campaign has achieved changes in the law, helped make birth registration a household concept, and mobilised communities to demand quality services from the state.
As a result, birth registration has been available free of charge for children up to the age of 12, a three-year amnesty period was established, enabling young people between 12 and 18 to register free of charge and single mothers have been able to register their children with the family name of a relative.
Since then, there has been increasing support in Bolivia for the future sustainability of the registration system. For example, a government-backed free telephone line has been set up offering advice on birth registration procedures and allowing users to register complaints about the system.
