Plan believes that gender equality is central to achieving its Vision and Mission. Over the past decade we have worked to address gender inequality as a key obstacle to the achievement of child rights.

Boys and girls have the same rights but face many different obstacles in accessing these rights as a result of their gender. Through our daily work, we see the negative impacts on boys and girls of gender-based discrimination, gender power relations and the denial of women’s rights.

This publication, timed to coincide with two key events in 2005, the Beijing+10 Review and the Millennium Summit, outlines our work from 1995 to 2005 to institutionalise gender. It reflects on our progress, celebrates our successes and identifies some remaining challenges. It draws on numerous Plan reports and project evaluations as well as discussions with staff across the organisation. Example are provided of institutional strategies as well as case studies from our program work.
