Benin's president praises Plan's education work
Plan CEO Nigel Chapman meets Benin president Dr Boni Yayi
28 October 2009: Plan Chief Executive Officer Nigel Chapman has met the president of Benin, who publically praised Plan’s work and investment in education.
President Dr Boni Yayi recognised the valuable contribution Plan has made to Benin’s children and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to education for all.
Greatly valued
“My government acknowledges and greatly values Plan’s investment in Benin’s children,” he said. “Our vision is still the same; education is a cornerstone for the development of the country. That is why I declared free education for all. I know Plan will also contribute to this so that all Beninese children can go to school and learn in a safe environment."
As a result of the government’s commitment to education, 150,000 new children are enrolled in school. Now, there is a need for more classrooms and 16,000 extra are to be built.
CEO thanks president
The CEO took the opportunity to thank the president and his government for their commitment to children’s rights and their support to Plan’s work in Benin. He said that enrolling children in school is just the first stage and Plan will continue to support their education, rights and futures.
“It is important, very important, that all children go to school but it is also essential that they stay in school and finish their studies, that they learn without fear and are protected against all kinds of abuses,” Mr Chapman said. “They need to have a perspective in life, to have a job and to be economically strengthened.”
Plan's success in Benin
Plan has been working in Benin for 15 years and aims for all children to receive a quality education. Plan supports teacher training, constructing schools and classroom supplies. A successful school feeding and household food security programme have also been established.
The CEO is visiting Benin, Togo and Senegal to see firsthand the difference that Plan is making to children in West Africa.
