22 October 2009: Plan has been continuing relief efforts in parts of Indonesia that were affected by the earthquake 2 weeks ago.

Plan has been working in 2 areas of the country, Western Sumatra and Southern Java.

Relief efforts expand

In Western Sumatra, Plan has launched an initial 6 month immediate relief programme. Plan is providing emergency shelter, non-food items, child protection and education. Following that, an 18-month rehabilitation programme covering health, education and disaster risk reduction is currently being planned. To date, approximately 22,500 people have been reached.

View from the field

Avianto Amri, Plan Indonesia’s disaster management specialist, said: “Two weeks after the earthquake struck, Plan has reached approximately 4,500 households - or 22,500 beneficiaries in the most vulnerable communities. Plan has already expanded our target area of 21 rural and remote villages through the provision of emergency shelter kits, access to health services, clean water, and hygiene kits. This assistance is urgently required to support those most vulnerable within affected communities – including women and children.

“With the rainy season about to start in Western Sumatera, the needs for relief items and access to basic services, such as shelter, health, and clean water are increasing. Plan intends to continue to scale up and expand our efforts that will include restoring access to quality education and safe spaces for children."

Vital support

In the Garut District in South Java, Plan has been distributing shelter kits, clean-up kits, hygiene kits and household kits to 20 remote and rural villages. The kits include various items, including water containers, tarpaulin, blankets, toothbrushes and crow bars.

Plan has set up a temporary learning centre for 300 students while workers build 39 temporary schools. We have also distributed materials for 40 schools and will be handing out school kits to 3,600 children.

Plan does not currently have sponsored children or programme units in the affected areas.
All work will be closely co-ordinated with the national disaster management agency and other international non-governmental organisations.
