In pictures: Plan classrooms help Haitian pupils

6 April 2010: Thousands of Haitian children are returning to school after the earthquake, thanks to Plan's emergency response work.

Plan has installed temporary classrooms and provided learning materials to children in Croix-des-Bouquets, Jacmel and the surrounding areas. View pictures of our work below.

Plan is working closely with Haiti's Ministry of Education to rebuild the country's education system. Over the next year, Plan will provide 50 temporary schools for 15,000 children.

Haiti: Back to school

  • Plan temporary classrooms and learning materials are helping children in Croix-des-Bouquets, Jacmel and the surrounding areas to continue their studies.
  • In the grounds of Leonce Meci School in La Vallee Plan has set up 10 classroom tents.
  • In the coming weeks, Plan will replace the tents with sturdier temporary classrooms to help pupils concentrate on their studies.
  • In Jacmel, Plan has provided facilities that are currently being used by 3 schools damaged by the earthquake - benefiting 1,300 children.
  • Plan has repaired a temporary structure on the site, replaced a roof and installed dividers so pupils can learn in separate classes. We are also building latrines for students and teachers.

  • Plan's presence has also increased employment opportunities. The school has hired young people from the community to make palm leaf sunshades for the classrooms.
  • Protected by the sunshades, the children can study in comfort.
